INTEGRATED CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

 

INTRODUCTION

            Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) is one  of the separate administrative wing comes under the Ministry of Social Welfare. ICDS is designed to promote holistic development of children under six years, through the strengthened capacity of caregivers and communities and improved access to basic services, at the community level. It also promotes a healthy Pre-natal and Post-natal environment for the young child and is likely to reduce the incidence of low birth weight.  It also concentrate the welfare of the pregnant women, nursing mothers and adolescent girls in the age of 14 – 19 years for child development and women’s empowerment.

 

MAIN  OBJECTIVES;

 

  • Improve the nutritional and healthy status of children below the age of 6 years.
  • Lay the foundation for the proper psychological, physical and social development 

of the child.

  • Reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropouts.

 

  • Achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation among various departments to promote child development.
  • Enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutrional needs of the child, through proper health and nutrition education.

         In Thoothukudi district ICDS is implementing in all the 12 Blocks and also in Thoothukudi urban is considered as 13th block through 1509 Anganwadi centers (1428 Main centers and 81 Mini centers)

PROGRAMME FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS:

 

       Kishori Shakthi Yojana (KSY) scheme  is being implemented  for the benefit of Adolescent girls 11 – 18 years by improving their literacy level and occupational skills and shape them in to better citizens. Under the scheme awareness campaigns on Nutrition,  Health, Legal Rights, Home Management and Child Care are conducted through two days camps for adolescent girls:

  • Health and awareness programme for 2 days

 

  • Vocational training for two trades in 38 days
  • Health and awareness should be implemented to all. Preference will be given to 11 – 15 years girls

 

  • Beneficiaries will be identified by CDPOs / DPOs.

SUPPLIMENTARY NUTRITION FOOD:

          Supplimentary Nutrition Food given in the Anganwadi centres are manufactured in Veerapandian Pattinam Weaning Food M & g Co – op Society at Veerapandian Pattinam, Tiruchendur Block. From this co-operative society a considerable number of women getting employment opportunity.  Total need of supplementary food for Thoothukudi district is met out by this society.  Now this society isin rented building and it needs government building.
